How to Choose the Best Organic Wine for Summer

Does shopping in the organic wine aisle stress you out? Luckily, we’re here to help you navigate the natural wine section like a boss.

With so many options to choose from, it’s hard to find the right wine for you. That’s why you should take a look at our handy guide to choosing the best organic wine for summer!

Organic Vs. Regular Wine

Here’s the deal: regular wines are chock-full of nasty chemicals. In fact, wine connoisseur Helen Johannesen told the media outlet Poosh that “There are up to 300 different rogue chemicals and substances that can be added to mass-produced wine.” Sounds gross, right?

It gets worse. Regular wines don’t even advertise what’s really inside of them…like “pig stomach lining or shrimp shells,” warns Johannesen. With little to no information on what you’re putting into your body, you could be drinking a glass full of sulfates or histamines.

As if that wasn’t enough, Johannesen shares that your average supermarket wine “might have excessive sugar in a form called Mega Purple,” an artificial grape concentrate.

How to Sip Safely

How do you avoid sipping on toxins? The only way to make sure that your wine is 100% natural is by going organic. That’s right – organic wines are literally the purest form of vino. According to Johannesen, natural wines are often grown from biodynamic farming, which is “based on the moon cycle through the constellations.”

If you’re still scratching your head, just remember the nasty hangover you had after downing a cheap bottle of sangria. Apparently, it’s the toxins in regular wine that give you a headache the next morning. That’s why organic wines are the drink of choice for summer.

But how do you know where to start? Johannesen recommends that you look for wines that are “handmade and small production.” Bonus points if you choose go for “orange wine and dark-hued rosés,” says Johannesen.

Best Organic Wines

Don’t worry – we all need a little help when it comes to the science of sustainable wine. First of all, organic wine is all about the environment, or “terroir” that its grown on. That includes “the climate, terrain, and soil,” states Johannesen.

Once you can appreciate the story behind an organic bottle of wine, Johannesen dishes that “You develop a palate that is elevated but doesn’t have to be expensive. Taking the plunge is easy, but you won’t be able to go back.”

If you need a nudge in the right direction, here are a few of our favorite natural wines:

  • Alexander & Maria Koppitsch, a 2018 Gruner Veltliner and Sauvignon Blanc blend with an amazing orangish color
  • 6 Roses, a 2018 Cinsault, Syrah, and Carignan blend that looks an incredible Rosé
  • Amore Rosso, a 2018 Sangiovese wine with a bold red finish

Now: you’re guaranteed to blow your friends away with all of your organic wine knowledge this summer. Cheers!
