How to Clean Your Yoga Mat (The Non-Toxic Way!)

Thanks to the recent quarantine, people are crafting everything from hand sanitizer to body oils.  Chemical-free, handmade yoga mat cleaning sprays are trending too.

Want to join the bandwagon? Take a look at how to clean your yoga mat the non-toxic way below!

How to Get Started

First things first, DIY yoga mat spray can be used to clean any item that you use to work out with on the regular, including:

  • Dumbbells
  • Weights
  • Kettlebells
  • Workout balls

Basically, if your face, feet, or hands touch it, you need to spray it with a special cleaning solution right away. Of course, our non-toxic yoga mat cleaning recipe is safe to use on your hands as well.

How does it work?

The combination of tea tree oil and witch hazel in our DIY yoga mat cleaner naturally disinfect your yoga mat.  Next, the combination of soothing eucalyptus and lavender oils refresh your yoga mat like nothing else.

Even though eucalyptus essential oil is a relaxing ingredient, it is not exactly necessary in our recipe list. However, due to his antimicrobial properties, it doesn’t hurt to add a few drops to your spray anyway.

Since your face and feet often touch your yoga mat during a session, it’s probably a good idea to apply our non-toxic cleaner after each practice.  Stay away from toxic cleaners like Clorox Lysol to clean your mat too (unless you don’t mind breaking out!)

Creating Your Cleaning Spray

Here comes the fun part: making your own homemade yoga mat cleaner concoction.  Check out what you need to get started below:

  • A small, glass spray bottle
  • Eucalyptus essential oil
  • Tea tree essential oil
  • Lavender essential oil
  • Witch hazel

Keep in mind that this recipe list is ideal for fitting into glass bottles that measure at least 2 ounces. If you’d like to make a 4-ounce batch of this solution, feel free to double our ingredient list as needed.

Start out by filling your spray bottle with equal parts witch hazel and water.  Next, pour in the following ingredients:

  • Four drops of tea tree essential oil
  • Two drops of lavender essential oil
  • Two drops of eucalyptus oil

Simply shake it all up and you should be good to go.

Using Your DIY Cleaner

Hit the yoga mat hard this morning?

Before you roll it up and carry on with your day, you might want to hit your mat with a little bit of our DIY yoga spray.

First, spray it onto your mat and let it settle for a few minutes.  Using a spray bottle, rub your DIY concoction around your yoga mat. When you’re all done, set your yoga mat outside on your patio or backyard to air dry.

An added bonus is spritzing your homemade spray around the room before you begin your yoga practice to set the vibe.  Now, you’ve got no excuse to skip your next home workout!
